Napadalec, ki ga je policija pozneje ubila, je v hotelu, odkoder so ga pred tem izselili, ker ni plačal sobe, najprej zabodel novega najemnika, tako da je v kritičnem stanju, nato pa še lastnika hotela in njegovega sina, je povedal tožilec Nicolas Bessone.
Nato je nadaljeval svoj pohod po živahni nakupovalni ulici v središču Marseilla, kjer je najprej v bližnji restavraciji s hitro prehrano poskušal z nožem napasti še več ljudi, a so ga gosti pregnali. V nadaljevanju je nato s palico poškodoval mimoidoča na ulici. Imel je tudi dva noža.
Potem ko ni upošteval ukaza policije, naj odloži noža in palico, so ga policisti ustrelili, je še povedal tožilec. Videoposnetek, ki ga je objavil časopis Le Parisien, prikazuje policiste, ki streljajo na napadalca, ko se ta nameni proti njim.
Po poročanju časnika preiskovalci domnevajo, da verjetno ne gre za teroristični motiv. Po navedbah vira blizu preiskave je osumljenec trpel za psihičnimi motnjami.
Napad se je zgodil le streljaj od starega pristanišča in pomembnega središča preprodaje drog v Marseillu. V tem delu mesta danes pričakujejo francoskega notranjega ministra Bruna Retailleaua.
